Social Media Harm and Protection

Updated: Dec 19, 2023

There are both positive and negative effects of social media use when it comes to mental health. Studies show that excessive use of social media may exacerbate mental health conditions like anxiety, body dysmorphia, disordered eating, self-harm, and depression, even as it promotes community building and artistic expression. The purposeful incitement of strong emotions on the internet, or "trolling," is a pervasive issue that affects both adults and teenagers. 58% of teenagers regard social media to be a source of acceptance, highlighting the complex effects of online connections, despite the fact that it can sometimes exacerbate feelings of overwhelm.

Social Media. Mental Health and Suicide: Research has shown mixed results on the effects of social media on mental health, with some attributing anxiety and depression to sites like Facebook and Instagram. On the other hand, consistent and deliberate use is linked to favorable results, indicating that moderation and intentional participation are essential. Research has connected suicidal thoughts to social media sites like Instagram. This suggests that using social media can expose users to damaging messages. Additionally, research points to a link between high levels of social media use throughout youth and a rise in early adult suicide rates.

Negative impacts can be lessened by identifying warning indicators of excessive social media use and establishing boundaries. Positive relationships on social media may be encouraged by mindfulness exercises like contemplative meditation. Online safety is enhanced by putting robust security measures in place and protecting personal data.In conclusion, it is critical to comprehend the complex relationship that exists between social media use and mental health. Through the adoption of conscious practices, establishment of boundaries, and prioritization of online safety, individuals can effectively navigate social media platforms and mitigate potential harm.
